The PrivateBank Norman Bobins Leadership Award

Those who have worked with Sol Flores are wowed by her intensity and staggering energy. Transforming that energy into effective and groundbreaking community development strategies has become this Chicagoan’s life work.

With her unstoppable enthusiasm, Sol in 2002 helped form La Casa Norte (LCN), the Humboldt Park community organization that assists youth and families that are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

LCN has helped thousands of households, providing housing advocacy services, counseling and job training. One of LCN’s crowning achievements was the opening of Solid Ground Supportive Housing Program – a center for homeless male youth that provides both a roof and individual services in a safe and comfortable home-like setting.

Building on the network she has created, Sol has even larger plans for Humboldt Park. Under her visionary direction, LCN has begun the design for a large, mixed-use community and housing development on the same block as Solid Ground at North and Central Park Avenues.

Sol has won wide recognition for her community work with LCN, including the Red Ruby Slipper Award, and The Chicago Community Trust 2010 Emerging Leaders Fellowship Award. She is also a board member of the Latino Policy Forum, Protestants for the Common Good, Council on Latino Homelessness, and Kuumba Lynx.

For her dedication to providing not only housing, but hope, Sol Flores is this year’s winner of the PrivateBank Norman Bobins Leadership Award.
